Bedding: how to choose the right substrate for your small pet

The bedding in your small pet's enclosure directly affects comfort, health and hygiene. Wood shavings are the most widely used option: affordable, absorbent and with a natural scent. Do make sure you avoid cedar or pine with strong resins, as these irritate the respiratory tract. Hemp litter is an excellent alternative: low-dust, it absorbs up to five times its own weight and is biodegradable.

For hamsters that love to burrow, a thick layer of 15-20 cm is ideal. Combine wood shavings with paper strips for a soft, diggable floor. Rabbits and guinea pigs benefit from a layer of at least 5-7 cm, topped up daily in wet areas. Corn granules absorb quickly and suppress odours effectively, but are fairly hard. They work best as a base layer, covered with a softer top layer of hay or wood shavings.

Replace the bedding at least weekly in full. Remove soiled areas daily to prevent bacterial growth. In warm weather or with multiple animals in an enclosure, more frequent changes are needed.
