Buying dog food: the right nutrition per life stage
Your dog's nutritional needs change as they age. A puppy needs energy-rich food with extra calcium for growth, an adult dog benefits from balanced kibble, and a senior needs easily digestible senior food with fewer calories. At Bopets we help you choose the right dog food for every life stage, whether it concerns dog nutrition for a sensitive stomach or simply quality daily food.
Which dog food per life stage?
Use this table as a guide for the right choice per age and size.
| Life stage | Age | Feeding tip |
|---|---|---|
| Puppy (small) | 0-10 months | Small kibble with extra calcium, DHA for brain development, 3-4 meals/day |
| Puppy (large) | 0-18 months | Controlled growth, less fat and calcium to prevent joint problems |
| Adult | 1-7 years | Balanced kibble with sufficient protein, healthy fats and fibre, 2 meals/day |
| Senior | 7+ years | Fewer calories, extra glucosamine for joints, easily digestible ingredients |
| Sensitive | All ages | Grain-free or hypoallergenic food for food allergies, skin problems or gastrointestinal issues |
What to look for in dog food?
Not all dog food is equal. Below you will find the key points to consider when choosing the right food.
Dry food vs. wet food: which is better?
Both have advantages. Dry food (kibble) is economical, has a long shelf life and is good for dental health through the chewing action. Wet food contains more moisture, is tastier for fussy eaters and can be warmed up more easily for older dogs with less appetite. Many owners combine both: dry food as a base with a spoonful of wet food for extra flavour.
Grain-free dog food: when is it needed?
Grain-free food is not inherently better, most dogs digest grains just fine. However, it is a good choice for dogs with a proven grain allergy (itching, diarrhoea, ear infection). In that case, grain-free varieties contain potato, sweet potato or legumes as a carbohydrate source. Always consult your vet if you suspect food allergies.
