The right transport for your cat

Most cats are not keen travellers. A familiar, comfortable transport solution makes the difference between a stressful and a calm journey. Whether it is an annual vet visit or a longer holiday trip: with the right preparation and the right carrier, everything goes more smoothly.

Which type of carrier suits your situation?

TypeSuitable forKey points
Hard carrierVet, car, planeSturdy, easy to clean, IATA-approved for flights
Soft carrier bagShort city trips, public transportLightweight, foldable, less durable
Cat backpackWalking, cyclingHands-free, window for your cat, maximum weight limited
Travel basket (wicker/fabric)Short distancesStylish, less sturdy, harder to clean

Choosing the right size

Measure your cat from nose to tail base and add 10 cm. The carrier should be tall enough for your cat to sit upright. An average house cat (4–5 kg) fits in a carrier of 48×32×28 cm. For flights: check dimensions with your airline (IATA standard: max. 55×40×23 cm in the cabin).

Cat harness

A cat harness is an H-harness or vest that closes around the chest and shoulders. Advantages over a collar:

🛡️
No pressure on the throat
A harness distributes force across the chest and shoulders, not on your cat's delicate throat.
🔒
Escape-proof
Cats can wriggle out of a collar, but a properly fitted harness stays firmly in place.
🎯
Better control
During startle reactions you have more grip via the harness. Ideal for walks in new environments.

Start by letting your cat get used to the harness indoors. Let your cat wear it for a few days without a lead before going outside. Reward calm behaviour with treats to build a positive association.

Frequently asked questions walking & transport for cats

Can I walk my cat on a lead?
Yes, with a proper cat harness and patience. Start indoors, letting your cat get used to the harness. Then move to a quiet outdoor area. Not all cats enjoy walking; respect your cat's personality.
What is the best cat carrier for the vet?
Choose a carrier with a top opening for easy placement and removal. The carrier should be large enough for your cat to stand and turn. Hard-shell carriers offer the best protection.
How do I get my cat used to a carrier?
Leave the carrier open at home as a sleeping spot. Place treats, blankets and toys inside. Take short car rides before the actual vet visit. Spray with calming pheromones if needed.
Harness or collar: which is safer for a cat?
Always a harness. Cats can easily slip out of a collar, and a tug on a collar can injure the delicate neck. A properly fitted H-harness or vest harness distributes pressure safely.
Is a cat backpack a good option?
Cat backpacks with ventilation windows are great for short trips and hikes. Ensure there is enough airflow and space. Not suitable for long periods. Most cats need time to get used to one.
