Dog Cushions

Dog cushions: comfort in every room

Dog cushion or dog bed: what is the difference?
The main difference is the edge. A dog bed has raised edges that provide a sense of security, ideal for dogs that sleep curled up. A dog cushion (also called a dog mattress, lying cushion or floor bed) is flat and offers maximum lying surface. Whether you are looking for a flat cushion as a sleeping pad, a washable cushion for puppies or an orthopaedic cushion for seniors, a good dog cushion is always a smart investment. A quality dog cushion distributes body weight evenly, insulates against cold floors and provides enough cushioning for hips and shoulders. Especially for older dogs and heavy breeds, an orthopaedic cushion makes a noticeable difference in mobility and sleep quality.
When should you choose a dog cushion?
- Your dog stretches out fully when sleeping.
- You want a resting spot that is easy to move (from room to room, into the car).
- You want a second resting place alongside an existing bed.
- Your dog is too large for a bed with edges (very large breeds).
What to look for when choosing a dog cushion?
The difference is in the core. Cheap cushions have polyester fibre filling that quickly loses its shape. An orthopaedic dog cushion with memory foam or cold foam provides years of support and is the better choice for your dog's health.
The same measuring method as with beds: body length + 15–20 cm. With a cushion it is especially important that your dog fits on it completely, as there are no edges to lean against. Not sure? Always choose the larger size.
Always choose a cushion with a removable, washable cover. A cushion without a cover becomes unhygienic and impossible to clean after a few months. With an extra replacement cover you do not have to wait until the first one is dry.
Thicker cushions (8–12 cm) insulate better against cold floors and provide more cushioning. Thinner cushions (3–5 cm) are lighter and easier to take along, ideal for the car.
Dog cushion vs. dog bed: comparison
| Feature | Dog cushion | Dog bed |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Flat, no edges | Raised edges |
| Ideal if your dog… | Sleeps stretched out | Sleeps curled up |
| Portable | Easy | Less easy |
| As a second resting spot | Excellent | Less practical |
| Sense of security | Less | More (nesting feeling) |
Many owners combine both: a dog bed as the main sleeping spot and a dog cushion as a second resting place by the sofa or in the bedroom.
Size guide: which dog cushion suits your dog?
Measure your dog from nose to tail base and add 15–20 cm. When in doubt, always choose the larger size, your dog should be able to stretch out comfortably.

Frequently asked questions dog cushions
Is a dog cushion better than a dog bed?
Not better or worse, but different. A cushion suits dogs that like to stretch out, while a bed with raised edges offers a sense of security. Many owners combine both: a bed as the main sleeping spot and a cushion as a secondary resting place.
What size dog cushion do I need?
Measure your dog from nose to tail base and add 15 to 20 cm. Since a cushion has no raised edges, you can choose slightly smaller than with a dog bed. When in doubt, choose the larger size.
Can I use a dog cushion in the car?
Yes, thin dog cushions (3 to 5 cm) are ideal as a resting spot in the car. Choose a washable model with a non-slip bottom for safety.
How often should I replace a dog cushion?
A good orthopaedic dog cushion with memory foam lasts 5 to 8 years. Cheaper cushions with polyester filling lose their support after 1 to 2 years and should be replaced sooner.
Are the dog cushions from Bopets washable?
Most dog cushions in our range have a removable cover that you can wash at 30 or 40 degrees. Check the product page for specific washing instructions.
What is the difference between a crate mat and a regular dog cushion?
A crate mat is a thin, flat cushion that fits precisely inside a dog crate. A regular dog cushion is thicker, offers more comfort and is intended as a standalone resting place on the floor.
